Knowing when to pause in order to move forward

Observador · · Author: Pedro Zuzarte

Resting and switching off have become a luxury, even though they are essential to mental health. Drawing on two cases, an executive's burnout and a teacher's depression disguised as tiredness, it distinguishes fatigue, burnout and depression and argues for seeking help when breaks are no longer enough.

Key ideas

  • Fatigue, burnout and depression are different situations with different treatments.
  • Depression may present mainly as tiredness.
  • When rest does not restore usual functioning, an assessment is warranted.
