Psychiatry consultations in Lisbon
A psychiatry consultation addresses emotional, behavioural and cognitive difficulties that can affect well-being and daily life.
When to seek help
Many people seek help only when symptoms are already intense and begin to interfere with their well-being or daily life. You do not need a diagnosis or a referral from another doctor.
It may make sense to seek help if you experience:
- persistent sadness, anxiety or loss of energy;
- constant worry or significant changes in sleep;
- marked swings in mood or energy;
- difficulties with memory, attention or concentration;
- unusual changes in thinking, perception or behaviour;
- doubts about a diagnosis or a treatment that is not working.
«There is no health without mental health.»
How the first consultation works
The first consultation is about understanding your symptoms and trying to clarify their causes. We look at your situation as a whole, not just isolated signs. We also talk about your general health, the approaches you prefer, your history and other factors that may be important.
If you have medical reports, recent test results or a list of the medicines you take, please bring them with you. You may also come with someone close to you, if that makes you feel more comfortable.
When tests may be needed
Even in mental health, some tests may be needed. They can help clarify the origin of symptoms, rule out other medical causes or ensure the safety of certain treatments.
Depending on the situation, they may include general or specific blood tests, such as vitamins or other blood parameters, an electrocardiogram, a neuropsychological assessment or imaging such as a CT or MRI scan.
How the treatment plan is decided
The treatment plan should be based on a rigorous assessment and diagnosis, always taking into account each person's preferences and needs.
It may include medication, but not necessarily. Depending on the situation, other approaches may be considered, such as psychotherapy, psychoeducation, supplementation, measures targeting sleep and lifestyle, or a combination of several of these options.
Before any decision, the different options, their benefits and limitations are discussed, to find the approach that makes most sense for you.
Follow-up
Follow-up consultations are used to assess progress, understand the response to treatment and make the necessary adjustments. They can also be important for monitoring possible side effects, reviewing goals and, when needed, repeating tests.
How often you are seen depends on each situation: it tends to be more frequent at the beginning or during periods of greater instability and can be less frequent when things are stable.
Confidentiality
All consultations are confidential and protected by doctor-patient confidentiality. Your clinical information is only shared with your consent or when required by law.
For this reason, the booking form on this site does not ask for, and should not include, clinical information.
