PhD

Depression, heart and cognition

He obtained his PhD in Medicine from the University of Lisbon in 2019, approved with distinction and honours by unanimous decision of the panel.

The thesis studied the pathophysiology of mood disorders and the pathways they share with cardiovascular disease. It was carried out in collaboration with the University of Toronto and Health Sciences North, in Canada.

He studied patients with heart failure and proposed NT-proBNP, a cardiac biomarker, as a possible mediator between cardiac dysfunction and depressive symptoms. He also reviewed the role of inflammation and oxidative stress as mechanisms shared by depression, cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline.
